Huh? It was an open secret. The x86 build of the OS X was always done,
there was a guy whose job was to test it for compatability (make sure
it works). Mac magazine pundits, would mention it every once in a while
and occasionaly PC pundits such as John Dvorak would also mention it.

The base operating system, is called Darwin and has been open source
from it's first release and has been compiled on x86 machines. The GUI
was close source and not available though, so most people ignored it.

After all there are a lot better Operating systems, for the x86 such as
Linux, the BSD flavors and Solaris if all you want is a cli and Xwindows.
