This is why you take your handy-dandy funnel and a small cold-chisel or
a marlinspike, and after you drain the engine oil from the oil pan, but
BEFORE removing the filter, you relocate your funnel and pan under the
filter, punch a hole in the low point of the filter, and drain the oil
out of the *filter* as well.

It makes the job much less messy.
