Apocryphal.  Yamamoto knew he was trying a crap shoot -- he'd been in
Mexico and the US in the 20s.  He was known in the whore quarters as Old
Eight Finger and told his young officers who were embarrassed by him
that if they didn't fart, shit, and chase women, they could tell him
what to do.

The Japanese Army at one point had threatened to assasinate him for
being less than militant.  

The biography of him that I read (which had these tidbits) didn't
mention the legendary line at all.

Sun Tzu told everyone that incidiary attacks (BC bombs) on cities didn't
do anything other than harden the resolve of the populations under
attack.  Nobody has paid him the least bit of attention.
