Hmmm... Was there enough RAM?  Lots of NFS/NIS?  I have seen an E10000
brought to its knees by bad network configs...

I've also used a number of SS5/170's, and liked them quite a bit.  I have
one kicking around the house now - with Sol 7 and 128M, it runs great.
