The three rules of cats.

1) The interest level of a cat concerning a toy is inversely proportional to the
amount of money spent on the toy.

2) The interest level of a cat concerning furniture/antiques/clothing is
directly proportional to the amount of money spent on the cherished item.

3) The interest level of a cat concerning humans is inversely proportional to
the desire of the human to hold/pet the cat.

My cats have never ventured near the cat condo that sits in a sunny spot in the
livingroom. They love the cardboard box my laptop came in. They
avoid most toys, but love the little plastic squigly from the milk jug seal. My
cats usually avoid the dresser-top, but love the antique secretarial desk (in
the same room, each under windows that face the same direction) that my
grandmother left me.

But nothing beats the day one of my cats jumped up on my workbench on a
cold-dry winter day and stepped on a Hewllett Packard scanner interface board
(back when scanners were $1500+). I could hear the static snap across the room.
It was, of course, out of warantee. The scanner interface next to it was brand
new and under warantee. The cat, of course, avoided that one.
