the mentor ui circa mid-'80s was like that, apparently accreted in
layers.  in addition to the gui menus and windows there were separate
cmdln and cmdhist windows.  it would pop the command template as soon
as you'd typed enough to distinguish, with options and arguments
colored to indicate which were multiple choice and which were freeform
input.  you could also see all this happening if you worked just with
the other methods.
