Parts like that are very hard to find where I live.

They are cheap enough online, but shipping brings the cost up.

This area has always had a lot of computers--in spite of basically being
a large swamp--but has never had much of a used market or parts for
them.

Well, I saw a 2509 for $20, and the cable part for it was $20, this my
comment about it being the same price. That's really not a problem, I
was just commenting that the cable setup will cost more than the unit
itself.

My exactly pain level depends on how many machines I'm currently
running. Right now only two servers are 24/7, so I'm in the "why spend
the money" state.

I'll hate it the next time I bring 2-3 more online and suddenly find I
need consoles... :)

RJ-45 is smaller, so I can see why they switched. Hopefully you can keep
the monkeys from cramming network cables into the RJ-45 serial ports.

What I meant was does it give good speed without dropouts and other
issues.

With the Portmaster, I was never completely happy. OK as a console, but
when I tried to use a terminal through one for every day use, I found
problems with dropped characters, speed control, and control character
issues.

Not a big deal for consoles of course, but annoying. It might be that I
just didn't spend enough time on it.

Oh yeah... ;)

First things first though: gotta get a terminal.

Actually, I'm thinking of boosting the buget a bit and trying to snag
about three of them.
