You can still occasionally get good service like that.  A couple of years
ago, I needed to find out the pinout for the serial console port of an old
nStor CR8E SCSI RAID array so I could reconfigure it.

I emailed customer service.  They said yeah, that's an ancient product,
but we'll see what we can do.

Within 24 hours I was corresponding with one of the people that *designed
the array* (who didn't even work there anymore, if I remember correctly), 
and shortly got the manual and engineering drawings for the console cable 
via email.
