On Topic, but not in response to anything in Charles' response per se, at $WORK we have an MS-Exchange-based email infrastructure, with a third-party archive tool. It scanns all email, and sorts them by meaningful keywords (properly formatted project names found within). We have the ability to mare emails as [priv] or [conf] - [priv] means no need to archive (as in "Who wants to go to $RESTAURANT for lunch?") and [conf] means "business confidential" (as in "$CLIENT is a reall ass-hat."). We do this since it allows us to share our email archives with clients/FDA without sharing all our dirty little secrets.

We are FDA regulated, so client/gov't audits are a possibility.
