The follow on class to the Iowa Class was the Montana Class. Details

They would have been sweet. 12x16" 50 Caliber in 4 triple turrets. Would
not have fit the Panama canal - the Iowa's were designed to be the
largest that could and the Montana's were 65k tons to the Iowa's 45k
tons. 

But the Alaska Class "Large Cruisers" (what other navy's called battle
cruisers) were much more interesting and much more useless in the real
world... At 27k ton they displaced the same as the Nevada and only
slightly smaller than the Pennsylvania though only mounting 12" rather
than 14" main guns. IIRC this was because we had spare 12" tubes already
made for the US Army's coastal defence guns.
