Yep, here's photos of me doing the iMac G5 17" midplane
replacement.
Later they switched to requiring people to send machines in for
service,
but I got in before they made that change.

Yes - I bought a
G5 iMac right when they came out, and it immediately
had problems. I also was
sent the bare midplane with the expectation
that I would change it out myself.
I didn't have a problem with this, but I can't really imagine Joe
Average
being excited about or able to open up the machine and do this
replacement. It
was medium level surgery - better than the current
iMacs, though!

After a
second midplane replacement and a new power supply, the machine
was still
wonky. I asked for my money back, but the 3rd level support
rep said they
couldn't do a refund (I bought it online). I did some
quick checking and found
that a high-spec G4 Mini and the new 20"
aluminum display were the approx.
same cost as the G5, so I asked them
if they would do an exchange instead.
They immediately agreed to that, and cross-shipped the Mini/screen with
the G5
- all at their expense. I don't have the Mini any longer, but I
still use that
display.
