FreeBSD 10. It finally has a packaging system and ZFS is properly supported.

can't speak for anything X related as I use it for servers.

For my old ZFS storage tank and general shell box, I had a Linux box with a
quad-core 3.3GHz i5 and 16GB of RAM. It would keel over under heavy load,
complaining about running out of kernel memory.

A deal on some HP Microservers came along just after it had crashed again. So
#109 later[0], I had a FreeBSD box with a pedestrian dual-core 2.3GHz Celeron
G1610T and 4GB of RAM. No memory-related crashes at all, which rather
surprised
me given the combination of ZFS and 4GB of RAM. Except for tasks that
necessarily chew lots of CPU, the thing also feels somewhat faster than the
Linux box.


[0] Well, #436 later, as I figured I had a use for several. I've still got
one
    left over that's new and boxed if anybody in London wants it at cost
price.
