I have to say, that is pretty shocking.  I once had a system that would 
fall off the ARP earth, I set up a cron script on another machine that 
would ping it every 3 minutes (machine was on the same LAN) and that 
kept it alive.  Wonder if that would work for your situation?

Ah, I did not realize that.

I may jump to the T2 series systems, but have been prowling eBay for a 
cheap T1 system to get my feet wet with.
