In my case, 
 dd if=/dev/cdrom0 of=irix-cd.img bs=1024k
 Burnt with cdrecord (with some strange incantation that I can never
 remember)

The more 'intelligent' a package you use to burn IRIX CDs, the less
likely they are to work.
