Not sure about booting without the battery, but my 3/110's
undisturbed-looking battery is a BR2325 cell.

Actually, as I'm typing this, I noticed an orange decal on the metal
strip shrouding the VME connectors (directly beneath the battery
socket, to the left of a centered barcoded Sun p/n decal) that reads
as follows:

"WARNING--
Replace battery with MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC or PANASONIC part number BR
2325 only. Use of another battery may present a risk of fire or
explosion. See owner's manual for safety instructions."

So there's the definitive proof. Yours may not have this sticker
especially if that 3/110 board was acquired loose... I'll email you a
photo when I get a moment.
