Heh, IIRC the IBM PC, and by extension the XT and today's P4 Multi-GHz
wonder box are all based on an off-the-shelf reference implementation
from Intel, since the goal was for IBM to "plant it's flag" in the
nascent PC market and "test the waters" in minimal time/at minimal
expense...

Basing a product on a vendors reference implementation is fine, but to
still be feeling the impact of that decision 20 years later, is, uhm,
sub-optimal! ;^)
