Well, it's spring in the DC metro area and as usual that means droughts with
plenty of rain and tornados.
The warm temperatures have convinced a variety of local organizations to
sell their old cold-weather furance units so they can buy real air
conditioners for the upcoming summer. Don't confuse the weather 3 weeks ago
with summer--it's just trying to trick you!
Anyway, the University of Maryland's terp trader surplus warehouse is one such
organization that's offering the Silicon Graphics Onyx2 Reality deskside room
heater with built in 3D graphics, networking and ultra-wide SCSI hard drives
to store your thermostat settings. You can also download a variety of
programs that will not only monitor and display current room temperatures, but
the national weather service has programs for this machine to _predict_ the
temperature (and overall weather, if you need it) for your entire hemisphere.

When I visited them today, I noted this unit had two MIPS R10000 CPU boards, a
SCSI/parallel/mux board, a differential SCSI controller and one XIO slot to
spare. A label said not only "Broken Power Supply" but also "$400" and even
"MAKE US AN OFFER."
If your interested in this unit, there are some other fantastic items as well:
SUN Sparcstation 2, 4, 5 and 10 units for under $100 dollars! That's right,
these incredible foot rests that lift your feet to proper ergnomic positions
while looking good also heat the space around your feet. Makes a great gift
for secretaries with cold desks near outside doors and a lot safer than those
"cheap" space heaters.
They also have many CRANEL brand external SCSI-2 enclosures with hard drives
in them. For $25 each you can stop shooting plates and clay pots with that
new spring shotgun.
For those of you with boats, they have high-quality Hewlett-Packard brand
anchors. Both the "HP 9000 E25" models and "HP Apollo" models are available.
Suitable for any boat 80 feet or below. Also works well as a tire-stop for
vehicles parked on hills that need that "extra" support.
