I know where this guy is coming from, and I see his point.

As hardcore tech types, it's easy to discuss the various pros and cons of
various assembly languages and processor designs. However, it seems to be
rare that people in management or controlling the purse strings are
equally capable of groking such discussions. I think what he is partially
asking is what is needed to convince them to go with SGI boxes for
visualization or Sun boxes for servers over PCs (or whatever) when all
they see at the outset is the price difference.

Another way to think about it is what do we tell our loved ones when asked
why in the hell we obsess over these computer manufacturers that they've
never heard of (or at least never seen before). If we can give basic
metrics (like TPM or TCO) that even a layman can understand, you will be
better prepared when proposing to management. You can't just go to them
and say "Because it goes up to 11".

Now, I imagine this has been done over and over again prior to my joining
this list, but if there was even a canned answer it would suffice to
squash things like this before they get out of hand.

Furthemore, I'm just trying to be objective. My personal preferences are
irrelevant.
