An SSH tunnel will be the simplest.  

Other solutions will have more configurability and more options (such as restricting traffic to certain IPs to only go over the tunnel), but will take a bit longer to set up.

As to performance, "it depends" .  SSH tunnels have a reputation of being a little slower than other solutions - whether this will make a difference to your situation, I don't know.
