[geeks] Cable modems/routers

I had a Motorola Bitsurfer for a couple of years and it ran fine.
I almost never had to power cycle it and it had lots blinkenlights to
let me know what was going on when they were having trouble with the
service. (common the first year/first provider @Home) It broke
after a year or so and they replaced it with an Ericsson PipeRider. It
has fewer lights ( a single light for WAN and one for LAN rather
than separate RX and TX lights for each like the Bitsurfer ) and a
tendency to fail in hot weather that is indistinguishable from the
internet service failing. I have to keep a fan pointing at it. It
has a USB port in addition to the RJ45 jack, but I've never used the
USB. It also bonds with a given MAC address and they have to reset
it on their end any time my router/firewall gets a new MAC address.
