Some of their stuff was good though, just surrounded by too much
illegible print and fluff to ever make me want to subscribe.
Then again, I feel that way about most magazines any more. I miss the
geek rags from the 70s and 80s.
I thought some of the interviews were very good, while others made me
wonder if the person it was about sued them. They did a lot of articles
on whacky research and barely-there technology, and they wrote it up as
if the stuff was going to be in Wal-Mart next week, when its more likey
years to decades away from commercial use.
However, some things Wired did were good. I thought articles on the
hidden infrastructures in society were good, and no one else does things
like that. For example, when they followed a trans-ocean cable from
hop-to-hop. In another, they detailed the nitty-gritty of a building's
internal systems, things which most people never think about.
So maybe what we need is to take those aspects of Wired and make a rag
which gets rid of their bad side.
Oh, and printing in readable colors would be nice too.
