There are some things that are very difficult to do if you're *not* a
consultant. Like high-end systems architecture. These things typically get
outsourced by smaller companies, and the only companies that can afford
dedicated architecture departments are larger 'career' companies like AT&T
that typically promote from within.

This is why some friends of mine and I are talking about starting an
architecture consulting firm.
