My parents last house, they built themselves in '81.  That was, of course, 
before the Bell breakup, and initially they were renting the phone from 
Bell (as was required then).  Anyway, the original phone wiring (as 
performed by Bell themselves) was awefull, and much as you just described.  
It went up in the walls, then back down, and over to the next room.  
Eventially, most of it got replaced with a more civilised setup.
