[SunHELP] cannot exec `as': No such file or directory

I get the following error when trying to compile apache...
cd ..; gcc  -DSOLARIS2=280 -DUSE_EXPAT -I./lib/expat-lite -DNO_DL_NEEDED
`./apaci`     -o helpers/dummy helpers/dummy.c   -lsocket -lnsl
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `as': No such file or directory
make: *** [dummy] Error 1

I have gcc 2.95.3 installed from sunfreeware.com.  What sun package is as
located in?  (either on cd or downloadable?)
