As it so happens, I too installed FreeBSD for the first time a couple of
months ago with a view towards exploring IPFilter.

However, due to time constraints it was only up for a few days before I
shut it down. It has been powered off and sitting in a closet ever since then.

I just booted it up and checking for "toor" :

breaker# more /etc/passwd | grep toor
toor:*:0:0:Bourne-again Superuser:/root:

breaker# more /etc/master.passwd | grep toor
toor:*:0:0::0:0:Bourne-again Superuser:/root:

So, unless this box was hacked also it looks like a standard feature.

Oh yes and it is also 4.3:

breaker# uname -v
FreeBSD 4.3-RELEASE #0: Sun May 27 20:43:06 EDT 2001
root at breaker.avdotnet.net:/usr/src/sys/compile/BREAKER
