I had uptime of almost a year before I ran into the problem.  If you go
to itrc.hp.com and plow through the knowledge db, they've got a note 
about named on 10.20 not working right "with large uptimes".  I discovered
this happens with 11.0 too, at least with the named that ships with the
OS (4.9.x, not 8.x).

Had to reboot a box in Delaware from my desk in Austin and pray that it
came back up. 8-)
