What is on the other end of the wire? I suspect auto-negotiation problems.

Subject: [SunHELP] Ultra 2 onboard hme problems

Hi all,

I just acquired a used Ultra Enterprise 2 with onboard hme Ethernet adapter.
Trouble is, the onboard hme throws lots of errors when trying to establish
a network connection.

Symptoms are as follows:
I start installing Sol.8 on the machine, and when it comes to setting up
hme0, the console logs:

Using internal transceiver
Auto-negotiated 100Mbit full duplex
Parallel detection error

and randomly throws these errors over and over again, until it
ends up with some strange external transceiver errors (where it
shouldn't, because there just is none).

Modifying /etc/system to force use of the internal transceiver
and only allow for one fixed speed (100mbit fdx) doesn't help
a bit, the longest "stable" network connection lasts a fraction
of a second.

Plugging in a SunSwift on SBUS1 and using that one as hme1 instead
of onboard hme0 gives me 100mbit fdx, but why plug in a second card
where all I want is the onboard one?

Strange enough, the exact same software installation runs fine
on my U1 Creator (same onboard hme).

Is my hme broken? Or is there some strange internal switch or
jumper that I fail to find?

Thanks

Jerry
