This would be my suggestion too. If one end expects hardware flow control and
doesn't see it you'll get an initial connect but no bit passage.

If you can verify that the sunboxen see a connection I would expect that they
are the ones with unsatisfied flow control, since dtr/dcd will clue the box
that a connection is there, but without seeing cts it will hang and wait in
perpetuity.

Also, I assume you are using a 7 wire rs232 cable for hardware flow control. a
3 wire cable (rd, sd and sg) won't work for hardware handshake. 

There is also a 21 wire interface, but thats just heresay (except for old
timers like me who have actually seen synchronous rs232 8>).
