Yes, you are right. But even if the system is "OSless", it still needs some 
"ID" to be recognized on the network. The system is a hardware platform with 
a network card, so it owns a MAC (Ethernet address) that must be uniq among 
the systems on your LAN. You can "ping" this system from another host, so 
you need an IP address for this "OSless" host.
Take a look at the following files (on the server side):
- /etc/ethers
- /etc/hosts
- /etc/bootparams
- /tftpboot
Read the man pages for: ethers, hosts, boot, add_install_server, 
nsswitch.conf.
