You gotta have the bootsector.  "installboot" is mainly used for restoring
machines from tape - boot single-user off cdrom, partition/newfs the HD
identical to the old one, "ufsrestore" files onto proper partitions from
tape, run "installboot" to put the solaris bootsector stuff onto the HD.

Done it many times.
