Both the SB1 and 2 were... quite non-standard.  Yes, I've done all the
obvious things... tested the CDROM using NetBSD on my DECStation...

No, the SB2 does not have openboot firmware.

I don't have a SB 2, I have a 3GX.. I've used standard cables with this
machine w/no problems. I'd like to offer (perhaps an obvious solution)
.. Did you put a terminator on the cd rom drive?
.. Not being familiar with SB2, does it have openboot firmware? If so,
   does "probe-scsi" work from the "ok" prompt.. i.e. does it recognize the
   cd drive?
