Tadpole sells or at least sold a lighter adapter/regulator.  It works
well, and like the SPARCBook3, is in my opinion very well built.

I can't answer that question.

I use my SPARCBook with a Motorola Mariner (or Montana?) modem, 
and a special cellphone cable to a Motorola cellphone.  I just send
an ATDT and the phone number, and it dials and does everything it needs
to itself.  You may have some problems finding these modems though, since
Motorola doesn't make this model modem any more, and of course it depends
on what kind of cellphone you have as well as the modem and cable.
