Thanks for all the followups! I will continue my investigations, and indeed may fall back to an emulator or netbsd at some point... (current weirdness: an early netbsd mips disk will mount and df, but issuing ls generates an i/o error... going to experiment with the ufstype argument on this one for sure...)
