[rescue] VirtualBox anecdotes - was Re: A wee bit off-topic

I recently read the book on Jobs by Isaacson, not a bad read. They talk a bit about the failure of Zune vs iPod, and Jobs did have a point, you do have to obsess over all the details and love what you are making/using. The Zune guys clearly didn't do that, or didn't have the ability to push manufacturing/engineering changes to adhere to their vision.

Windows wins by default, because Apple took their eye off the ball - the non-desktop/laptop products generate like 55% or more of their profit.

I bought an older HP EliteBook to use as a laptop, just because it has a better keyboard. The Apple chiclet style is tremendously annoying.

The "integrated, sleek" vision continues to elude Linux GUI designers/users BTW. Hell, I could be 100% happy using Nextstep 3.3 with a modern browser, PDF viewer and email client - that was my most pleasant computing experience.

Cheers

Patrick

Windows has turned into a Damned Fine Operating System in the post-Ballmer
age. The implementation has finally caught up with the elegance of the
API, and the new APIs are even nicer in their own right.

I'm seriously considering carrying a notebook running Windows 10 as my
primary work environment, now that Apple's absolutely refused to make a
portable computer that suits my needs.

Fortunately(?) the sort of thing Apple does make is just what the current
crop of consumers wants, so Microsoft have an actual impetus to release
something that isn't a steaming pile. I'm used to being forced onto a
different OS every few years, anyway.
