I have a USB - serial adapter I keep in my desk, and my Linux box has a 
4 port serial card installed ( can never have too many serial ports when 
you like playing with old computer ).

Try re-seating all your cards.  Sometimes things come loose while your 
fighting with something else inside the system. Failing that, I think 
you'll need a serial connection to troubleshoot any farther.
