I'd expect it to work, since LocalTalk is (physically) just HDLC.  My
understanding of the connection boxes (not the phone-net transceivers) is
that they're MUXes and transformers to implement CSMA/CA over the RS-485
links that LocalTalk used station-to-station.

With that hardware removed and a null-modem RS-422 cable in place, it
should "look" the same to the two hosts.

I don't see the need for the second level of complexity.  If I can copy
the images to the network-connected Mac, I can send them to other systems
via something common over IP (smb, scp, or even ftp).  As a general rule,
I run no Linux in this house.
