Sorry all, just disregard that nonsense. Was looking at too many things
at the same time.
All is well now... I followed the steps described in that blog post I
mentioned:

And now have a working Sun Blade 150, firmware password removed. In
short, I booted the machine and at the OpenBoot prompt, removed the
NVRAM, then reinserted it, rebooted with Stop-N and set-defaults.
