Hmmm, I was under the impression that 6.1 dropped support for POWER3-based
platforms, i.e. it won't install. Or is it rather that it's not officially
supported but will install?

do it without media.  You might be able to do it booting it off of standalone
diagnostics, which are downloadable in the form of an .iso file.
