You are *supposed* to be able to attach SATA drives to a SAS controller (fall-back/compatibility mode), but you can not attach a SAS drive to a SATA controller...

Particular controllers may not support a fall-back mode (I've heard of some issues, but my memory is hazy), but they should.

Any particular models you are aware of with strong x86/x64 support under Solaris, or is a scan of the HCL in order?
