I just changed resolution from 1280x1024 (native for my LCD) to 1152x864.
Scaled it looks absolutely horrible, as you would expect.  However, if I
set the LCD to non-scaled, it's nice and sharp again, with black borders
all around.  Of course, my 17" panel is now more like a 15" (or worse), but
if you can live with losing some active physical display space...

My gripe is that all the cheap 19" panels seem to be 1280x1024.  I don't
want bigger pixels, I want more of 'em!
