BTDT. Student has a floppy with bad sectors. Recover data,
tell student to duplicate it onto a new disk. Student comes
back the next week with the same disk. This time I say, "When
you come back to the help desk with a new floppy in hand, I
will recover this one." And hand the broken one back.

<whine>"But you were able to make it work the last time!?!"</whine>

"Sorry, I refuse to do more work because you are too stupid
to follow instructions."

Student leaves and later comes back with a new floppy,
purchased for $2.98 at the bookstore. After recovering the data
for the second time, I made the point of cutting the "bad" disk
in half while the student was watching.

At the time $2.98 was probably 2 longnecks at the Dixie
Chicken, so on some level I could relate (making $4.80/hr
at the time or something equally pathetic). But still, why
didn't they just back it up after the first near disaster?
