a friend who was going to build the World's Slowest Linux Cluster on
diskless sparc classics finally decided that at 1m18s to compute an ssh
host key, they were just too slow to do any serious work with, so he's
going to punt. feh! the young are so impatient.

(i thought it'd be neat to have them sit behind a cgi front-end and do
distributed rendering of cheesy 3-d text for web buttons on demand, or
something. we we also thought about getting a friend who's a welder to
make a sculpture out of them - like a tree or mobile where the power,
network and console cables would be wrapped up like an umbilical and
secured to the little anti-theft ring thingie, so they could hang there
like ripe fruit, but classics don't have enough blinky lights to be
visually interesting. still, how many people have 500 bogomip sparc
sculpture in their living rooms?)

anyone from the pacific nw interested? he _reeeeeally_ prefers that
someone come get 'em. otherwise he'll put 'em up on ebay and charge just
enough to cover shipping.

they're in reasonably good shape (these were all decommissioned a couple
of years ago; i used to admin them pre-y2k, in fact :-) but i'm not sure
if any of them still have hard or floppy drives. no keyboards, mice, or
monitors, however. stats i do have are:

ROM Rev. 2.9, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #171575.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #171757.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 48 MB memory installed, Serial #117007.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 48 MB memory installed, Serial #176983.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #116496.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 48 MB memory installed, Serial #151466.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #106262.
ROM Rev. 2.9, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #170286.
ROM Rev. 2.12, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #104826.
ROM Rev. 2.12, 24 MB memory installed, Serial #176981.

(and yeah, i already have half a dozen at home and my basement is bulging
at at the seams, or i'd take 'em.)

contact me off-list for more info and i'll hook you up.

shucks, since so many auspexes (auspecii? auspexen?) are being let go
recently, maybe i ought to offer mine up for grabs too? :-)
