I won't argue; that would be a really nice feature.  Sun's installer has
always struck me as clunky and crufty in many ways.  This is just one of
its many deficiencies.

(My personal major peeve about it is that its dependency management is
weak.  There's no way to just tell it "I want to install this package
and all its dependencies" or "I do not want to install this component or
anything that depends on it."  You've got to hunt down all the damned
dependencies by hand and individually enable or disable them.)
