This is because the U.S. versions no longer contain what you think of as sugar. 
They are sweetened with corn sugars which has a different taste than
cane or beet sugar. 

During Passover Jews of European descent won't eat corn. Coke, Pepsi and
others produce special "kosher for passover" beverages that are made
with real sugar. The stuff will start to turn up in markets in a few
weeks if you want to see the difference.
