Probably didn't want to deal with the service calls from people yanking the
batteries with power down and not replacing them quickly enough.  If the
battery dies, can the average end user restore the system?

I've done products with battery holders, and it's very uncommon to have
someone in the field properly replace the battery.  It's _very_ common for
somone to remove it to "test" it, and then not put it back in time to
prevent memory loss.

Hey, it could be worse...the sun4c used that damned battery+sram+rtc+xtal
combo chip.
