If you're forced into the union, doesn't that sort of destroy the whole
purpose of it?  What would've happened if he hadn't joined the union, or
if he'd left it right after getting the job?

Seems like he should've "nearly paid" his union dues, then.  What the
hell good is a union where you have to abide by all the rules, don't get
to vote, still have to pay, and don't get to choose to be in or out of
it, anyway?  Sounds like that solution is worse than the problem.
