Well, guess what... Gnome 2.6 came out and now after many fixes, the
Nautilus file manager no longer stumbles over itself trying to display
25 gifs in a directory.  And there are many other speedups.

Looks like they REALLY took the advice about not doing premature
optimization on your application to heart.
