It's called the marriage PENALTY - I don't pay less taxes filing jointly, I pay more.

I'm sure welfare moms get pregnant dreaming of the $1,000 DEDUCTION they are not entitled to, since they don't pay taxes, they're on WELFARE, remember?

Don't get me started on "deductions" that are owed to folks that don't pay taxes (heady-explody)...

What about a pure consumption tax? Oh, that is abusive to low-income people.

Flat tax? It's a trick, the majority won't trust it.

Abusive tax rate? High-earners leave, putting a bigger burden on those at the lower end of the spectrum.

Sliding tax rate with many opportunities to deduct income - financial darwinisim - only the smart "succeed" (they study the tax code and arrange their financial matters accordingly)... ANd yes, bing rich and hiring a smart person to do your taxes does qualify you as "smart"
