I'd probably use a D-A converter instead, unless you were planning on
closed loop control with a photodiode or three...


I'm disappointed that the SGI folks didn't use a high quality lamp to begin
with.  Surely you can get a good low voltage lamp with a nice hefty
filament, maybe even run undervoltage (5V in to a 6V lamp?), to last more
than a few years.
