  found it... what you describe doesn't sound like what I'd expect
  from a system that is overheating.

  On the other hand, what is typical for a system having electrical
  problems? I personally fried a PowerSeries PSU that was jumpered for
  115V when plugging it in to 230V (actually it died when I powered
  the machine up) - no magic smoke, no smell, no changes on the
  machine... ok, the circuit breaker in the house did it's job. :)
